Have Questions?

Physical Therapy FAQ

QWhat should I expect on the first physical therapy visit?

Your first visit will include a thorough evaluation where your physical therapist will take measurements, assess your condition, and develop a personalized plan of care tailored to your needs and goals.

QHow long are appointments?

Appointments typically include 30-45 minutes of direct care with your physical therapist, plus a possible additional 15 minutes for modalities. Please arrive 5 minutes early to check in.

QHow long do people usually participate in physical therapy?

The length of your physical therapy program depends on the collaboration between your doctor, physical therapist, and you as the patient. Your care team will work together to determine the best timeline for your recovery.

QWhat should I wear to physical therapy?

Wear comfortable exercise clothes that allow you to move freely. Please avoid jeans, blazers, or restrictive clothing.

QWhat do I need for the pool (aquatic therapy)?

Bring a swimsuit, towel, and optional sandals and shampoo. If you prefer, shorts and a t-shirt (non-white) are acceptable alternatives to a swimsuit.

QDo I need a referral for physical therapy?

Michigan allows direct access to physical therapy, meaning you may not need a referral from a physician. However, some insurance plans do require a referral. Please call our office at 616-447-4090 to confirm your specific requirements.

QWill my insurance cover physical therapy?

Most insurance plans cover all or some physical therapy services, though coverage varies by plan. Private pay options are also available. Contact your insurance provider or our office for details about your specific coverage.

QHow many visits does insurance allow?

The number of allowed visits varies by policy. Some plans allow as few as 6 visits, while others allow 60 or more. Medicare has a dollar cap per calendar year. Check with your insurance provider for your specific allowance.

QWho can provide physical therapy services?

In Michigan, only licensed Physical Therapists (PTs) and Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs) can provide physical therapy services.
